YUUMI ISHIDA

Born in Japan

In 2008, I was interested in gypsy right after watching the movie “Gypsy Caravan”.
I lived with Romanian primitive gypsies with my two-year-old son, took pictures of them, and organized exhibitions.

Is capitalism right? Can I get freedom by believing it?
I wanted to know the truth of freedom.
And I wanted to make sense of owning money, land, and things, and the need to spend time on the past and the future.
Can I be more free by not having them? I asked for an answer to living with them.

I didn’t need any color on my photos of Gypsy.I wanted to brush up on the simple information with black and white.
But there was a little missing.

I stained for expression their chaotic history.

My work was printed on cotton Baryta photographic paper that was no longer produced.
I chose that way to preserve the lost culture in the future.

Primitive gypsies may disappear from this earth before long. Their language may disappear in the near future. That is the reason why I titled of my work in gypsy language.
